Zootopia is the U.S. title, while Zootropolis is the title used in the UK and some other countries for the same Disney movie.
If you have seen Zootopia and Zootropolis, you may wonder if they are different movies. They are the same Disney animated film, but Disney released the movie under different titles in different markets. In the United States, the film is called Zootopia, while in the United Kingdom and some other markets it is known as Zootropolis.
This title difference often confuses viewers searching for the movie online, especially when they see different posters, trailers, streaming pages, or references to Zootropolis 2. The characters, story, animation, and filmmakers are not different versions of the original movie.
The title change is mainly a regional naming difference, not a spelling mistake. Disney’s UK site officially uses Zootropolis, while Disney’s US site uses Zootopia.
This guide explains why Disney uses both names, where each title is used, and which version you should use when writing or searching.
Quick Answer
Zootopia and Zootropolis are two titles for the same 2016 Disney animated movie. Zootopia is the title used in the United States, while Zootropolis is used in the United Kingdom and some other international markets.
For example:
- US: Zootopia
- UK: Zootropolis
- Zootopia 2: US title
- Zootropolis 2: UK title
The story follows police officer Judy Hopps and fox Nick Wilde in a city populated by mammals. The movie has the same story and characters under both titles.
What Does Zootopia or Zootropolis Mean?
What does “Zootopia” mean?
Zootopia is the title used by Disney in the United States. The name combines the idea of a zoo with utopia, suggesting an ideal city where different animal species live together.
The movie takes place in a modern mammal metropolis where animals from many environments live together. Disney describes the city as a place where animals can pursue different careers and lifestyles.
What does “Zootropolis” mean?
Zootropolis is the alternative title used in the UK and other markets. It combines zoo with metropolis, meaning a large, important city.
Disney’s UK description calls Zootropolis a modern mammal metropolis.
So, the two names use different ideas:
- Zootopia → zoo + utopia
- Zootropolis → zoo + metropolis
Both names describe the fictional animal city.
The Origin of Zootopia or Zootropolis
The difference comes from regional movie naming, not from two separate films.
Disney released the animated movie internationally under different titles. The US title became Zootopia, while the UK release used Zootropolis. Disney continues to use these regional names for the franchise.
The title difference also continues with the sequel. Disney’s US site calls it Zootopia 2, while Disney UK calls it Zootropolis 2.
This means the title change is intentional. Writers should not “correct” one title into the other without considering the intended market.
British English vs American English Spelling
This is not a British vs American spelling difference like color and colour. Instead, it is a regional movie-title difference.
| British English / UK Market | American English / US Market | Example |
| Zootropolis | Zootopia | Disney movie title |
| Zootropolis 2 | Zootopia 2 | Sequel title |
| Judy Hopps | Judy Hopps | Same character |
| Nick Wilde | Nick Wilde | Same character |
Disney’s official pages confirm the different titles for the same franchise.
Does every English-speaking country use the same title?
No. Movie titles can vary by market, so writers should check the official Disney title used for their target audience.
The important point is that Zootropolis is not simply the British spelling of Zootopia. They are different official titles for the same franchise.
Which Version Should You Use?
United States
Use Zootopia.
Example:
